Face Off s12e07  Feral Fungi  1 August 2017

As opposed to a feral fun guy?

Last time on Face Off, inspired by haunted items,
the artists created people possessed by the objects.

Andrew won the challenge.

Suzanne was sent packing.

The six remaining special effects makeup artists meet up with host McKenzie Westmore to find their next challenge:   Create a zombie being consumed from within by a fungal virus.

Kierstin seems to be overly enthused, she has had a long love affair with the cordyceps fungus.   Kierstin will be the foreman for Team Ethereal Effects this week, and she chooses the Octopus Stinkhorn.

Andrew will be the foreman for Twisted 6 Effects and he chooses the Brain Worm.

Nobody wants the Shaggy Ink Cap.

“I have peanut butter & jelly in my blood, man.”

Each team of three has to create zombies in various stages of infection:  1 day, 7 days and 30 days since being exposed to the Cordyceps.

“Mmmmmm, Cordyceps.”

“I am so excited about this challenge.”

Yeah.   And Pelosi & Trump are getting married.

It’s a standard three-day challenge.    After a few hours on day one, mentor Michael Westmore drops by.

Kierstin is told to raise up the skin at the penetration site, so it looks legit.

He wants Nelson’s itty bitty sites to have high points, with shading, they are too rounded and ‘gentle.’

Andrew gets advice for his eyes.

Phil is told to rethink his sculpt.  Mr. W. sees a burn victim, not a fungus from the inside bursting forth, or at least annoying from underneath.  Or, to look more ‘brainiac.’

No Faina?  No KC?

Some are molding at the end of day one, which is good.

On day two Faina looks at Team Ethereal Effects and thinks they are not doing enough.

Phil has trouble with his mushroom fungus mold.

On day three Andrew helps with Phil’s mushroom fungus, on the 2nd attempt.

Faina struggles to find the balance for her 7-day zombie, between Kierstin’s and Nelson’s 1-day and 30-day zombies.

Let’s see how they did.  Joining host McKenzie Westmore are regular judges Glenn Hetrick, Ve Neill and Neville Page, and guest judge Neil Druckmann.

No, not Duckman.

Team Ethereal Effects

Team Twisted 6 Effects

Glenn is over the moon with KC’s 7-day brain mushroom patient.

Ve thinks Nelson’s paint job is muddy looking.  Neville wanted more differentiation between the organism and the human.

Neil states Phil’s work doesn’t read as fungus.  Ve thinks his work isn’t as cohesive as the other two in his shop.  It looks too blistered.

Glenn wants to shoot Andrew’s model in the head, so he can see what happens.

“What?  Where’s the exit?”

"One time, Glenn tried to choke me to death."

Ve hates Faina’s face work, but likes the leg work.  Neil thinks the face bit is cartoony.

“What’s wrong with that?”

Neville finds Kierstin’s work well executed.  Neil likes the paint work, but wishes it was breaking up more.

There is no winning team—–Now they are competing as individuals.

KC wins the challenge.

Phil is let go.
The edit was pretty heavy this week, so,
there was no chance it was gonna go any differently.

They announce that the next challenge is the semi-finals.   So, they will drop from five to three next time, yes?

Tune in next week for aliens!
