PRs10e2 • Candy Couture • 26 July 2012

Last week we met the 16 contestants on the Road To The Runway episode 0, and saw them present two looks in the Times Square episode 1.  Ven Budhu made a great impression, as did Gunnar Deatherage, but not for the same reason.  Christopher Palu won the challenge, while Beatrice Guapo was auf'd.    Dare I say the judging seems reasonable so far?

It's morning at the Atlas apartments and some contestants are saying that the wrong person went home.  Boy, was I off, huh?  Ven is confused because he didn't win.  That's right, and I'm confused that I'm not the Ruler of the Universe, or that Susan Dey hasn't proposed to me yet.

Are some designers too shy to show their face?  Are there truly 15 people here?

Over on the runway, Heidi gives not so subtle hints as to the next challenge, to the point that a few designers guess what is the next task:  Design an outfit of their choice made of candy, supplies coming from the Dylan's Candy Bar (the owner being the daughter of Ralph Lauren.)   $250 to spend, and then Dylan Lauren says everything for them will be half off, so, virtually, $500 to use, so there should be no shortage of materials, right?  Let's take a look, eh?

Shopping is a contact sport, like Hockey, eh?

But first … why I am certain Project Runway is completely fake and false:

We all know that models don't eat in real life.

Ven Budhu
black licorice • crushed rock candy
Impeccable construction, "stained glass" inspiration, but did anyone immediately think of Althea Harper's newspaper challenge outfit?  #1 of 15.

Fabio Costa
sour strips • crushed rock candy
Strong concept, well executed.   Safe.

Gunnar Deatherage
licorice • candy foil
Nice enough idea, but the construction wasn't as flawless
as the editors would have you believe.  #3 of 15.

Melissa Fleis
licorice • silver twist ties
Convincing leather effect, very nice.  When will she be called out for using
only black? I'll go ask Christian Siriano and Irina Shabayeva.   Safe.
Lantie Foster
umbrellas • rain boots • hard candy
Using umbrella fabric as fabric, without much actual candy?
This was the obvious one to go.   #15 of 15 & auf'd.

Alicia Hardesty
jelly beans • sour strings • gumballs
Mimicking an exposed bra isn't a strong point, but even
worse is that the muslin is clearly showing.    Safe.

Buffi Jashanmal
sour strips • tissue paper • cotton candy
The skirt idea is old for PR, but the top is interesting enough to save her.   #14 of 15.

Andrea Katz
candy dots • umbrella • tart candy
It is quite alarming that this could be so unimaginative & have such
poor shape, and yet be in the middle.  Safe.

Kooan Kosuke
cotton candy • licorice • jelly beans
Interesting save, after failing with the 'melted' cotton candy.
At least his point of view is still there, right?   Safe.

Nathan Paul McDonald
foiled chocolate • hand bag • candy boxes
If the model didn't have to hold it up, I'd say this was a solid, impressive entry.   Safe.

Raul Osorio
gummy strips • umbrella • Life Savers
It does look like clothing, but this is clearly merely safe

Christopher Palu
licorice • rock candy
Well made, straightforward design.   Safe.

Dmitry Sholokhov
sour balls • black t-shirt
Strong impact, great use of the sour balls as beading.  Is the over-reliance on the black t-shirt the reason this is middle of the pack?  Safe.

Elena Slivnyak
pina colada licorice
The outfit is falling apart, or, to be more precise, the licorice is falling off of the muslin.  What is alarming is that the bigger problem is that she is quickly becoming a one-note.  C'mon, Elena, branch out before it's too late!  #13 of 15.

Sonjia Williams
gummy sharks • jelly beans • gumballs
Well made, believable color story, a very strong look.  #2 of 15.

Are the editors playing tricks on us?  Did Gunnar have a personality transplant between challenges?  Is Ven getting the cranky Bert edit?   Are those being edited out now going to be in the finale?  (Think about season six.)    I have to say, my original favorite, Elena, is tanking fast.   My other favorite is still Ven.   Who will join him in the finale?   Will the judges ever get to a final three again?   Who will fulfill te roles of the spoilers we read about weeks ago?

PRs10e1 • A Times Square Anniversary Party • 19 July 2012
First off, dear reader, thank you for stopping by.  In all fairness let me share my credentials: NONE.  I'm here neither as a fashion expert, nor as a writer.  I'm merely a fan of Project Runway, in all its incarnations.    Here's to hoping this can lead to some personal growth, and where to find all the international versions available.

Hmmm … bring a dress, make another to match.  Didn't they just do this on Project Runway All-Stars last year?   Is that why the ratings were a mere 2.013 million Thursday evening? I was hoping the news of recycled challenges meant the s3e6 Waste Not, Want Not challenge.  Still, it's nice to see them being celebrated and promoted for season 10.  And, all in all, I'm over the moon that PR & KKGG are back.

I guess I should just be happy they didn't have a Bright Light Pillow as inspiration for a dress challenge.  Oh, wait, they did with PRASs2e9, huh?  I am sick of the commercial … does this lighted blanket or pillow REALLY appeal to anyone on the planet, I mean, besides Kooan?

"This isn't Project Obnoxious!"  Oh, honey, yes it is, Gunnar made it so.  Did you enjoy seeing Cain & Abel fight?  Or, was it more like Joy Behar & Rush Limbaugh?

This week I'll just make quick comments, since the most important parts of the episode seem to be the spoilers for upcoming episodes, and Gunnar Deatherage trying to live up to his name and KILL the competition with his brattiness.

Dumpster diving?  Yes, we had Kayne mention it a bit in season three, but I just automatically thought it referred to clothing and/or furniture.  At first I thought of Fabio Costa as Osama bin Laden's fabulous gay little brother, but now I'm having visions of Dr. John Zoidberg.   Time for Latrice's five G's!

A quick aside … who designed and fitted that dress for Heidi Klum?  When you make the model look like she has a baby bump (no HK fertility jokes, heh) you've screwed up.  I mean, just ask Alison Kelly or Pamela Ptak, right?

Ven Budhu
Cohesive, with interesting detail.  #2 of 16.

Fabio Costa
Beardo weirdo has two nice, cohesive looks.  Now I feel guilty for thinking he looks like a pretty terrorist.  Safe.

Gunnar Deatherage
Very cohesive, not special enough to match the smack talk and attitude.  Safe.

Melissa Fleis
Black, black black, black black black.  Nice, but not entirely new, but the judges are fooled.   #3 of 16.

Lantie Foster
Cohesive?  Not entirely, but at least there are ideas in the 2nd look. #15 of 16.

Beatrice Guapo
Not really cohesive (no pattern on the 2nd,) but what really kills it is the lack of design.  The show was edited to highlight her lower level of construction skills, so it should be no surprise that she was #16 of 16 and auf'd.

Alicia Hardesty
Cohesive and interesting.  Safe.

Buffi Jashanmal
Cohesive, not terribly fresh.  Safe.

Andrea Katz
Cohesive, yes, but who wants to wear a lamp shade skirt?  I mean, outside of Whoville?  Scary & safe.

Kooan Kosuke
Same aesthetic and yet NOT cohesive.  How did he do THAT?  With a point of view that screams "I'm a 6 year old girl!" just how long will it take Nina to bring him down?   Not long.  #14 of 16.

Nathan Paul McDonald
Cohesive by construction, not color, which is fine. Why are they shown out of order?  Both looks are nice.  He is safe.

Raul Osorio
Not getting the cohesion.  He is safe.

Christopher Palu
Cohesive, yes, but why did B/M edit it to show the companion look first, and the original outfit second?  It gives more of a wow effect, than if they were shown in correct order.  Is that what gave him the win?  Shenanigans!  #1 of 16.

Dmitry Sholokhov
Not cohesive, but interesting, at least.

Elena Slivnyak
Cohesive, yes.  Still loving the look, but fearing the judges will think it is too costumey.  It is safe.

Sonjia Williams
Quite cohesive, more pieces, could be one to watch.  Safe.

So, from the coming attractions do you believe that Fabio Costa is the one to crack?  Sure, now that I'm getting into his work, he's having a meltdown.  It broke my heart to see Elena crying, that has to be a red herring, please, not a genuine early auffing.

Maybe my top designers are Ven B., Fabio C., and Elena S.   There are several that I want to see more from (especially Sonjia,) and several that can go home.  Time will tell if my top 3 can actually make it to the finale, and if I can acquire any blogging skills.

It's Pre-Judging Time!

First thoughts on the sixteen contestants for Season Ten:

Ven Budhu, 28
from Kew Gardens, NY (born in Berbice, Guyana)
I wanted to be on Team Ven, I mean, he's got a strong point of view, his work is cohesive, it looks like his construction skills are impeccable, and (comme moi) he uses a mac and shaves his head, but, when he tells the camera he loves red, why on earth is he wearing pink?  My brain is bleeding!  ™ TG.  Alright, we had Mitchell and Anthony Ryan, so I can handle another color blind contestant, were that to be the case.

Fabio Costa, 29
from Brooklyn, NY (born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil)
Why is Fabio wearing The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection Jeffrey's attire at the casting call?  Why does he use TFS:UC Cesar's aesthetic & terminology when explaining his looks?   Why does beardo weirdo look like Osama bin Laden's *fabulous* younger brother?  I want to take a razor to his overgrown hair, both head and beard.  Oy, he's being too referential already, and there's not even a challenge presented yet.  S7's Maya is waiting in the wings to deck him, in my version of reality at least.

Gunnar Deatherage, 22
from Louisville, KY (born in LaGrange, KY)
We were all bummed that he got axed so early last season, if only for the killer name (see what I did there?) ™ MTG.  Yes, I do see that he has grown a bit, and I am glad that they rewarded that with a spot on PR10.  Still, I can't get past the hair.   Pick a color and go with it.

Melissa Fleis, 31
from SF, CA (born in Rogers City, MI)
Not to pick on Melissa only, but doesn't it seem like everyone is using black, gray & white, at the expense of every other color available?   There's more to life, people!  Still, I was indeed enjoying her work, but if Uncle Nick has to correct her outfit at the audition, can that bode well?  Is that the beginning of a story arc?  Is Melissa bound to be first or last this year?

Lantie Foster, 48
from NYC, NY (born in Sacramento, CA)
I did like some of her work very much, but when I see the first outfit she showed at the casting call, all I can hear in my head is Nina whining about not being able to teach taste.  Walking up to the judges and letting them know she recognizes them can't be the best way to start a rapport, can it?
Beatrice Guapo, 29
from Marina Del Rey, CA (born in O.C., CA)
If Mondo is excited for Beatrice's work, is that a guaranteed finale placement?    I want to see more color, but, clearly, I'm out in left field on that one, with nearly every contestant living in neutrals.

Alicia Hardesty, 27
from L.A., CA (born in Brandenburg, KY)
I wouldn't be trying to look like a prior contestant who was unfairly kicked off of a prior season first.  If one must look like a former designer, look like Christian Siriano or Mondo Guerra, right?  I do enjoy some of Alicia's work, but the McKell referencing unnerves me to the point that I predict an early auf.

Buffi Jashanmal, 32
from NYC, NY (born in London, England)
Thank God for color, but too costumey, yes?

Andrea Katz, 58
from NYC, NY (born in Oceanside, NY)
Most likely to fulfill the role of woman in spoiler information leaked in June.   Why?  Age and geography.

Kooan Kosuke, 30
from Queens, NY (born in Himeji, Hyōgo, Japan)
The talent is there, but where is the taste?  Or, are we designing for a little girl?

Nathan Paul McDonald, 33
from NYC, NY (born in Zanesville, OH)
If Leanne gives you a yes, how can I disagree?  I'm enjoying the construction skills, but, when I see his color story of red, black & white, all I can think of is Ven.  Actually, when I look at Nathan, I see a cleaned up version of Fabio Costa.

Raul Osorio, 27
from Minneapolis, MN (born in Canoga Park, CA)
He wow'd Mondo, but I'm not seeing it.  All I see is a bad haircut hiding under a hat.

Christopher Palu, 24
from Massapequa, NY (born in Brooklyn, NY)
Most likely to fulfill the role of man in spoiler information leaked in June.

Dmitry Sholokhov, 33
from NYC, NY (born in Navapolatsk, Belarus)
His casting call wasn't a home run, but I am intrigued enough to want to see more.

Elena Slivnyak, 28
from Daly City, CA (born in Kiev, Ukraine)
Please win, I'm loving the jacket work.

Sonjia Williams, 27
from Woodside, NY (born in Boston, MA)
Hey, it's DiDa Ritz!  ™ Everyone Else.   At least she isn't afraid of some color, so I pray to God she will last a while.

So, how close will these first impressions match the outcome?  We'll soon see!  (Dear God bless Elena!)
